They are all good foods. Artemis is much lower in protein (25%) than the others (34%). I do not agree with the "grain free" advocates. The grain free foods have the same percentage of carbohydrates (except for Artemis) and the carbohydrate is white potato (not to be confused with sweet potato). If they were lower in carbohydrates, that would be a different matter. For my money, Brown Rice and Oats are much better carbohydrates than white potatoes. All grains are not equal. I do not like corn, wheat and soy, but to say all grains are bad is ridiculous. Incidentally Blue Wilderness is now "grain free." You have an old ingredient list.
my eyes bleed from this post.
grains are bad period

grain free has less carvs period.

Please stop spreading misinformation. I hate people who talk as if they know what they are saying when they're not.

I bow to your obvious superior knowledge. Thank you for setting me straight. I wish you would go into more detail though. I own and have read and studied about 13 books on dog nutrition. I suspect that you probably wrote one of them, which one? I bet you have even written articles in a few of the ten Dog magazines and newsletters that I subscribe to. I am guessing from your grammar that you are an English professor also. Thanks.

well there's a lot of idiots who write dog books, regardless of how bad his grammar is.

How do you find out info like that. I had tried to look into it, and all I know is last year they were bought by Eagle Pack (and they are all now Well Pet). Is there somewhere online that tells you where all the "Well Pet" brands are being produced? I'm all paranoid about what I'm feeding my dogs now lol
This list is from 2007 (geared mostly toward Menu foods and the recall) - but its a start

The Pet Food List. Pet Food brands, manufacturers, products, ingredients, sources, cat, dog, food.

I have a problem with Wellness Core being made by American Nutrition....the makers of Atta Boy!
Any Idea where their Super5mix is made?

Why not go the extra step for the same money and buy a dog food made in a family owned facility like Orijen, Evo, Merrick? These companies take that extra step in assuring you are getting what you paid for.
Would you include Fromm in this category?

Wellpet ~ Tewksbury, MA
• Holistic Select (10 varieties)
• Wellness Core (3 grain-free varieties)
• Wellness Simple Food Solutions (3 varieties)
• Wellness Super5Mix (9 varieties)
NOTE: Made at: Wellpet's plant in Mishawaka IN (eagle pack), ; Hagen Pet foods, Waverly, NY; CJ Foods Bern, KS; American Nutrition, Inc, Ogden, UT; Diamond Pet Foods, Gaston SC & Lathrop, CA.

this is the latest manufacturing info ive seen for wellness, so it could be made at Hagen Foods, CJ Foods, or either of those two Diamond Plants..........most likely a combination of all four.

Thanks - so this would apply to Holistic Select also? I thought just the wellness label was mfg elsewhere.

i believe all the wellness dry are manufactured at those 4 locations, the core at american nutrition, and the EP holistic select at the mishawaka plant.
This is the response I got from WellPet

Thank you for taking the time to write about Wellness Small Breed dog food.

American Nutrition is the manufacturing partner responsible for making our Small Breed Adult formula.

Thanks again for contacting us.

seems they have certain foods being done at certain plants.

I am new here. Not to put a damper on the fun of getting a new puppy, so first off, Congrats to you!

I am a raw feeder but do like to occasionally feed a good canned meat to accompany some RMB's for a change in protein profiles.

I was just enquiring with WellPet company about their Wellness Core canned food and found out from the company that they are sourcing their Vit. C and also their Taurine supplements from China.

I don't know about you, but for me, I just refuse to feed my dogs any more Wellness, when I know that it has ingredients that have come from China. Thankfully, I was feeding raw during the whole melamine disaster.
I just wanted to put this out there and it is your choice to make.

I am sure that the whole melamine/China sourced foods have been discussed at length. But in case you did not know, it is just an FYI.

Best wishes with your new pup!

I would like to just add one more thing. While it is very important to know who makes the food, where it is made, how it is made etc. It is just as important to find out where the company sources it's ingredients from.

I am sorry, but since the whole melamine scare, I do not trust anything from China.
I had to be persistent when I was emailing WellPet. I had to keep asking until they revealed that they do source their Vit C and Taurine from China.
So, while anyone is at it, please ask even more specific questions of these companies to find where they get their ingredients from.

I believe that it is actually a situation where these manufacturers are hoping no one will ask because if most people knew, they might not be as popular as they are. You have to be your dog's advocate as you would your own advocate or a child's advocate. It's up to us, to ask all the right, and pertinent questions.

unfortunately, it appears a very high percentage of manufacturers get their vitamins from china, even when they claim their "food" comes from american sources.
