Do you think...

there will ever be a day that more vets believe in and support the raw diet than not?

To me, it seems that there are far more vets that are clueless about the diet and who shake their head at it than those who support it right now. So, do you think there will ever be a day that things will change?

Is it a matter of little education on nutrition, or is it a matter of them supporting these packaged diets in an attempt to keep their businesses afloat?

I sure hope that one day, things change. And that there are more vets out there we can all feel comfortable with sharing and learning about a raw diet from.

What do you think?

I think the more conscious and informed their clientele becomes about proper nutrition that they will have no choice but to educate themselves on raw feeding practices. I still think it's a good idea for ALL vets to educate themselves on the things their clients are reading on the Internet like raw feeding...it's just in their best interest so they don't seem like clueless idiots about it. They don't have to support it, but they should know about it pros and cons.

It may take 20-30 years for their to be more holistic vets/MDs but I think that day will come.

I think the majority of vets simply don't know. They are taught what they are taught and they are taught by dog food companies.

I do believe that PMR is "coming back" big time. I mean, my last "batch" of puppies -- 7 of 13 puppies were kept on the PMR diet. And that's in mini dachshunds -- not a common PMR fed breed. But people LOVE it! Will it be the majority? I don't know.

The company I get a lot of my food through -- S.A.D. Dog Sushi -- is a local company (that does ship). But they prepare the food from totally fresh meat, organ and bone. So it's "pre-packaged" but not in the same sense. Their goal is to eventually have a "chain" of brick and mortar stores throughout the US that sells the freshly packaged meat/organ/bones. I hope they get there some day :) And I am totally thrilled to be helping them do it (by buying and promoting them)!

Granted I do not purchase from SAD Dog Sushi to feed my dachshund, which might be even easier than purchasing from a distributor via co-op, it is so incredibly easy to feed a doxie on PMR. For my one mini-doxie, a case of wings with the occasional purchase of less than $5.00 worth of pork, fish, heart, turkey, etc. is ridiculously inexpensive for a dog under 13 lbs. Considering the issues of dental health and natural glucosamine for joint health, I feel it's a no-brainer.

There may be a day, but it will probably be very far into the future. It would be different if Hill's didn't play such a large role on nutrition taught at vet schools, and having that/similar low grade dog food sold at vet clinics.
