Tripe: Frozen vs Fresh

My tripe should FINALLY be here middle of next week, and I am very excited.

But, I've been thinking about it - one of the great things about tripe is the good bacteria in it, right? And doesn't freezing stuff kill bacteria, or slow it's production right down anyway? So, does freezing tripe cut down on its beneficial bacteria? Not that I can feed a lot of it fresh, since my dog eats so little and I have nowhere to get it fresh on a regular basis, but I'm just curious as to whether it's going to do him as much good as I'm hoping if it's been frozen.

Might be a silly question, but.....thought you guys might know the answer!

I'm sure if it is fresh/frozen it doesn't lose that much. Vegetables they say keep their nutrients when frozen far longer than fresh. For convenience the frozen is much easier for me, cause even if I got fresh it would go into the freezer.

Freezing does not kill alot of bacteria - it kills alot of parasites.

Consider scientists in a lab. They save bacterias in a deep freezer for many years, then take them out and grow them.

Bacteria are pretty tough :)

Oh, I also think the temps at which we freeze things would barely slow bacteria down, much less stop them long enough to reduce populatioin.

I always buy tripe that has been frozen. It is frozen immediately after being harvested. Really, I think it would be next to impossible for most people to be able to feed fresh tripe on a regular basis, that had never been frozen. You'd have to be a butcher or something.

Yeah, I don't think I could do fresh on a regular basis, and I'm sure frozen is still WAY better than no tripe at all, just curious =)

Thanks Nikie - that makes sense =) I can't wait to try it. The little snot better eat the stuff!! He loves horse and cow poop...so hopefully tripe will taste like that =P

I'm not sure if this batch is grass fed, organic, etc., but I sent the guy a big long e-mail last night asking if he would possibly be able to get me organic, hormone free, antibiotic free, grass fed in the future. Hopefully, he will! I also asked him about getting exotic meats, and different organs, since I can only get liver and kidney in the grocery store, and at the moment, I'm not thrilled with that, because they're not marked whether they're grass fed, organic, etc., etc. Just "Beef Liver" or whatever. So, I'm working on that =)

AND this guy also has way better prices on chicken wings, and he has lamb flaps and some other things I can't normally find, for good prices. Hopefully he won't charge me much for delivery and I can get some fun stuff for my boy =)

Dogs really like tripe! If he likes cow poop, he'll love tripe. It has a similar smell. I had the dogs food out, and it had a bag of beef, a bag of tripe and and a bag of chicken. It was the bag of tripe that Maggie stole and started to eat! They will usually eat the tripe out of their bowl first. :hat:
