Stress/vent about boarding vaccination

So I was scheduled to be induced on Monday but my dr ordered another ultrasound yesterday to check his size and because he is so big she called me last night to ask me to come in tonight to be induced. Because of this I have to get Kiora into a kennel right away. Well all the kennels require her to be "up to date" on distemper, parvo, and bordetella. Since she has never been vaccinated for bordetella and it has been 2 years since she received a distemper/parvo vacc they need her to have it before she is boarded and apparently research indicating lifetime immunity means nothing. Also they don't have time apparently to do an antibody titer on her because I need her boarded tonight. I am so upset and I just don't know what to do.I mean I have to board her, I dont have a choice in that. I don't know anyone out here so there isn't anyone I could get to watch her as a favor.

I am going to call around and see if anyone else will take her without the unnecessary vaccines but I am not holding onto high hope.

I am just so upset right now. I feel like I am being forced to poison her.

You may have already figured out a solution by this time of the day; but maybe calling your vet could be helpful. Often they have names of trusted people who will come into the home to care for a pet; or who will take the pet into their home. I've often found that vet techs provide these services too. Good luck with everthing.

I wasn't able to get anybody to watch her at the last minute like that so I ended up taking her to that clinic and getting her the vaccinations. Though I complained mightily it didn't make a whiff of difference. I don't know..I feel really cheated by the whole experience. On the one hand I was really desperate to get her in somewhere and she apparently did really well at this place apart from a little stress the first day when she chewed off her collar...other than that they said she was sweet and well behaved the entire time which I was not expecting. So they must have done something right. On the other hand I feel like I got really jipped. These people caught me between a rock and a hard place and they knew it. Over the phone they told me that I could be present when she was vaccinated but when I got there they told me it would be an hour or so before they could do it and I had to leave to make it to my induction. I was so upset and cried all the way to tbe hospital. Not only did they vaccinate her but apparently a vet examined her too. A vet that I never laid eyes on or spoke a word to in my life. And did I get a report on her "well check"? No. But I got billed $45.00 for it. Also they told me on the phone that they would feed her the raw meals I provided. And agian at the clinic they took her food and made notes on what meals to feed her what days. I made sure to only give them ground food as I know most places would not feed rmb. But when my boyfriend picked her up they returned 2 of the 3 meals I sent her with and she has had some trouble pooping since I've had her back. Usually she poops once a day. She has pooped 3 times in 5 days and the first one was enormous and subsequent ones have been tiny and she strained so I've been feeding only boneless in the hopes od correcting it. Also her fur is thinned significantly at the vaccine injection site and her skin there is dry.

I am just mad about this situation but there is nothing I can do about it.

I think I am going to try rubbing some coconut oil on the dry area. Is there anything else I can do for her?

I understand your frustration, but I'd like to play Devil's Advocate for a bit...

Yes, you were told that you could be present for the dog's vaccination(s). However, there was no promise made about timing. And since your timing & theirs didn't exactly mesh, I don't think they they are entirely to blame for the fact that you were unable to attend the dog's vaccination.

When you got the bill, did you ask for a copy of the "well check" or ask to speak with either the Vet or a Vet Tech regarding this examination? If I am reading your narrative correctly, you did not. (Or more correctly, your boyfriend who picked up the dog did not.) What you got was a itemized bill, which is pretty much par for the course. It is really up to you as the dog's owner to ensure you are kept abreast of everything that transpired while the dog was in their care. You need to take charge of your dog's health, just as you would your own.

Regarding the fact that you received back 2/3 dog's meals could in fact mean that the dog refused to eat. This is not uncommon. My dogs were boarded with a good friend recently, and the 6 yr old really didn't eat much while he was away, while the 2 yr old chowed down as usual. This is typical behaviour for the older dog, so we weren't really concerned about it. Since this is the first time your dog has been "away from home", I don't think it atypical either. Likewise regarding the difference in her toilet habits; again, not atypical. Now that she is back home things will probably normalize within the week.

Yes, you are not happy with what transpired. But given that this was a first for everyone, things were not so traumatic.

You are right my boyfriend did not ask for a report on the well check. Be has never kept dogs before and doesn't know what is standard or not. Mstly I guess I am upset she was examined in the first place. I did not request an examination and those vaccines do not have to be administered by a veterinarian. I feel like they examined her solely to charge me for it. She was not due for an exam and I certainly would not ask for one to be done by a vet I don't know.

The vaccinations I feel that they should have made accommodation for me to be present at. I had informed them of when I would be droppy her off and they had told me I could be present for them. What reasonable person would expect me to have hours available to sit around and wait? I feel like they had it set for "later" so they could give her a checkup and charge me for it.

Lastly while they did not provide a report about her alleged checkup they did provide a report about how she did in the kennel. In that report they stated "she ate all her food". She was eating something all right and I suspect it was some of the science diet they had lining the walls of the clinic. That or worse.

All in all am just grateful that she won't have to go back into a kennel anytime in the foreseeable future. I am happy that she was safe but other than that it was pretty nightmarish.

Also I did call them every day while I was in the hospital to check on her progress. I was told she was doing well and no one expressed a problem with feeding her raw on any of those calls.
