This is going to sound strange, but there has been 3 times now since feeding raw that my dogs have puked up a hairball type thing.

Cesar was the first a few months after being on raw he randomly puked up a HUGE, solid wad of hair (not fur) it was pretty dang solid mostly hair with bits of plastic, string, grass, and twigs in it.
it was about 12 inches long by about 2 inches thick (yeh it was huge) plus it REEKED! it stunk like poop mixed with hot garbage, i picked it apart and thru it away.

second time was a few months after that, again he puked up a wad of hair with bits of other stuff in it stinking, no meat or bones inside, but it was about half the size.

2 days ago Chimera also randomly uked up a stinky hair ball with bits of rocks, string and even a twist tie. hers stunk and was about as big as Cesars first one 12 inches long by about 2 inches thick, it was HUGE! picked thru to find no meat or bones.

Im starting to wonder if this is the bodies way of collecting and expelling all that nasty bits of junk they eat into a ball then once it becomes too big pukes it up. due to the smell im imagining its been setting in the stomach for QUITE some time, not to mention the sheer SIZE of them, because i would OBVIOUSLY notice someone eating a giant wad of hair every once in a while.
so has anyone elses dogs ever puked up somthing like this?? and also what do you all think about it?

You have to wonder where this hair is coming from? What color is it? Has anyone cut their hair and thrown it into the garbage? Dozer sometimes gets hunger pukes and I will find a chunk of bone or a wad of grass with bits of paper or something in there that he ate that he shouldn't have. Hair can block the system so keep an eye on them!

it was mostly cat hair, i assume just from eating meat off the carpetting and floor, i vaccum but with 3 cats , its near impossible to keep all the cat hair up off the floor. not to mention my hair falls out alot and clogs up our vaccum belt often (im not bald, i jsut shed alot too lol)

This probably is the reason for the hairballs. Try feeding him on a "special" mat? I have a plastic mat that I use. It's the type that you can get to put under the water dishes so water doesn't end up all over the floor.

"poop and hot garbage"

Sounds like they are eating a ton of junk but their bodies are doing a great job of expelling it. I would just be more careful about what you leave laying around, vacuum more often...etc.

i try to not leave anything lieing around, and my room 9where they eat) gets vaccumed 4 days a week (i vaccum out the rats cages daily and just end up vaccuming my room every other day about) the rest of the house gets vaccumed about twice per week.

but theres rat hair, dog hair, cat hair and people hair

One of mine does this probably once a year. It's not quite as big, but is normally a little wad of my hair, with maybe a leaf or some grass he may have eaten. Sometimes there may be a piece of bone that didn't digest right. One time, there was a fully intact piece of watermelon I had given each of the dogs. The first time I saw the hairy vomit, I thought it was very weird. Unfortunately, my hair is shedding more than my dogs!

I'm just wondering where the other stuff is coming from and why they are eating it.....Please remember that B.T's are prone to have to having zipper surgeries because they eat things they shouldn't although mine are great about not eating foreign things.. My foster person in Canada just spent 1900.00 on her B.T., she ate a leather belt and they also got out a plastic bottle cap..............

My puppy threw up a hairball this morning. Looked and acted EXACTLY like a cat while doing it. It was mostly dark fur, which she may have licked out of the carpet? Probably too long to be hers, but she could've found a spot which had collected my old Rottie's hair that I hadn't noticed yet. (I find little treasure troves of the departed dog's hair occasionally.) I am not the best at vacuuming, I'll admit.

I figure, better out than in, and she kept her breakfast down afterwards.
