What chicken did you feed him? Did you feed chicken backs with all skin and organs removed, and then slowly, ever so slowly add in thumbnail sized chicken meat to his diet?

no the orginal raw group i was with is not so nice at times but i was told that for him an his size to do ch leg quarters an they almost killed me for giving him the chicken backs an how he was geting to much bone an not enough meat. he got the quarter an i had to skin it cause even a teny tiny sliver of skin an fat an he had cannon butt for a week straight an lost weight an looked/smelled like he was dyeing i freaked out but kept it up a few weeks then went back to kibble an the chicken was super low sodium

I am so glad you came!!!

FWIW I stole her from that horrible Nazi group on facebook

Okay.

I would fast him for 24 hours, give home made chicken broth if you want to.

Then start him on the PMR diet using this guide How to Get Started | Prey Model Raw

Take all the skin off the backs and quarters, trim off fat as well.

Then feed him 2% of what he should weigh. I'm terrible at math so I'll let someone else figure that out.

Go from there. Feed him the boney, chicken pieces to get his body use to it. You must not flip flop. It has to be steady steady.

HI Michelle. Glad to see you made it to this group. I am a member of the Nazi group you came from and I agree, not very nice people. Or patient.

Anyways, I am glad you are considering raw again.

I started my dogs on chicken quarters because I did not have access to backs but backs do work too, regardless of what some people may have told you.

I would start out slow with him. I would give him less than 2% to start if even the tiniest bit of skin (fat) gives him diarrhea. His system is not used to raw so you have to gradually teach his digestive system what to do with it. This may take some time. Skinless chicken meat with bone (whether it be quarters or backs) in the beginning is the most bland. You may have to be anal about deskinning it at first but that will go away after a while. If it doesn't, you may want to consider turkey. Be mindful too, that it could be the chicken itself that he can not handle. But, one thing at a time.

So feed him a little less than 2% at first with no skin. Try this for a week or two and see how that goes. Then, let us know.

Not every way works for every dog (unlike what that other group tries to force down your throat). Every dog is an individual, just like humans. You need to understand what works for YOUR dog and the only way to do this is through trial and error. You must be patient about it. And don't beat yourself up if something doesn't work the way you think it should.

Old Roy may be putting weight on your dog but the ingredients in it are pretty awful. I should add that you should not give him kibble if you want him to eat raw. Don't confuse his system.

In the beginning you have to go slow. But once he is adjusted, you can up his amount of food. Trust me, they CAN gain weight on raw. I have three dogs that pretty much proves this. LOL

Welcome!

yes we ditched the kibble an i remembered the nazis said to not feed both an it stuck with me... he got his last bowl this morning an i know it is horrible but it was the only thing at the time he could eat an get some weight with... but now that hes thin but not looking like hes gonna die tomorrow id like to try it again... he still needs weight an i hope we will get there with raw instead... so i go shoping a little tomorrow till i get paid next week then its time to bargain hunt lol

If you are looking for lower prices (and, aren't we all?) I would suggest contacting slaughter houses. I got excellent prices for tripe, lung, and trachea as well as goat and lamb heads. I purchase my staples (beef heart and chicken backs) at a meat retailer but the prices are not great. Posting an ad on craigslist is a shot in the dark but you never know what might turn up. Quite a few members here have had success with either free freezer burnt meat (which is just fine to feed) or cheap animal carcasses. I just recently was contacted from someone who saw my ad and wants to donate his water fowl catch to me come duck season (and I hope he comes through for me!)

Also, if you have any local deer processing plants, might not be a bad idea to ask them for the left overs like rib cages and deer heads. I have a place I can get them for free!

Feeding raw can be as cheap or expensive as you make it. It may take some effort to fine great contacts but once you do, its all worth it. Also, if you have a co op on your area, you may want to check them out. It is never too early to start looking for places to get free/cheap meat for your dog.

And pictures are always welcome...there are no rules about what kinds of pictures you can post here....well, within reason. I don't want to say that and then have someone post nudey pics or something. LMAO. I mean, you can post as many candid pics of your dogs as you want and we will not bash you for it. In fact, we kind of encourage that.

Hi and Welcome.

Please read the Prey Model instructions and be slow. Your dog sounds very sensitive and if you take it super slow you should do well. For a sensitive dog I would start feeding at 1.5% of the weight he should be. Once he transitions and is stable on the food you can up the percentage and before you know it he will start adding weight. There is a slight possibility he may have an intolerance for chicken but start with chicken, go slow, no skin or fat and 1.5% and see how he does. If he is really intolerant than turkey would probably be what I tried next.

hi....let's see some pics first before we decide how to approach this....i'm sorry your intro wasn't the way it can go...

some dogs don't have the constitution that other dogs have.

we start with bonier cuts of chicken because of the cannon butt issue..and it's possible you're feeding too much also or even too little.

the first thing i would do to soothe her belly is to get a good probiotic...we use primal defense ultra.....that will help populate her gut flora..

i would also get some bovine colostrum and let's start working on her from the inside out.

if she is too thin, she may be better off on kibble for just a little while longer plus a good quality canned food to get some weight on her and get her 'ready' for another go around with raw, if that makes sense.

Approximately, what is his current weight? What is his ideal weight?
How much, in ounces or pounds, do you feed at each meal? Are you feeding twice a day?
Are you using a scale to weigh the food after removing the skin and fat?
Is the chicken unenhanced, less that 100 mg. of sodium per 4 oz.?
Does the dog receive any snacks or treats in addition to each meal?

I am so glad you joined us too, I know how it is to have a boy that can't keep weight on (I was up to well over 2,000 cal per day for my boy and he was not gaining weight) I was lucky and my boy is just made for raw, but either way, after we all get the GI issues settled, remember that your boy will probably lose weight until he is on red meats. I look forward to seeing pictures of your boy
