I had Mayas teeth cleaned last month. She is a 3 1/2 yrs old~~ 10 LB~~ Rat Terrier. I feed her a combination of raw and home cooked food. I don't want to put her through that again because it really messed her up for about a week. Now I have a second dog from a puppy mill and she is about 2. I do brush their teeth but it is a big fight. What else can I do to keep their teeth clean? I give them chicken wings and necks with on occasional pigs tail (pieces) a few times a week.

Feed them both a complete raw diet. I don't understand why you want to feed home cooked food. A diet of raw meat, bones, and organs will keep their teeth clean and give them all the nutrients they need. You will never have to brush their teeth again. I have an 11yo Great Dane whose teeth looks like puppy teeth and they have never been brushed in her life. If you want more details about feeding a complete raw diet, check out the link in my sig. If you have more questions, come back and ask. :)

I started out feeding RMBs a couple times a week for the hopes of dental benefits. Honestly, it did jack. A couple RMBs a week is not going to counter the affects of all that unnecessary starch/sugars that they are ingesting when they eat kibble or cooked food. It took months on kibble to get all of Louis' tartar off, and I was pretty diligent with brushing back in the day. Now I don't brush at all!

Some dogs just build up tartar easier than others, like in my case....I think chicken bones are too soft and just can't keep the tartar off his teeth. Plus, he eats them too fast! Lamb and beef ribs work great though, but he has a more sensitive tummy and wasn't able to eat those without digestive upset until a couple months into full raw. So for me at least, going full raw was the best solution. That being said, you can also look into this thread about Petzlife

I'm curious though, how to you keep the fronts clean? i know something like turkey necks are going to scrap clean the carnasials etc, but what about the canines?

I am also wondering about this. I've heard that feeding bigger complicated meals will help with this, because they have to use their front teeth to rip and tear. I can only do this about once or twice a week, though...

As soon as they finish off the last of my home cooked food that I have in the freezer, they will go 100% raw. Tonight they will be having a couple of chicken necks. They love that and wings! I would love to never have to take them in for another teeth cleaning. My newest dog, Megan (puppy mill dog) has tarter and it would be great to see that gone!!

Agreed, full raw is the way to go. Mine have always gotten RMB's irregardless of what their main diet was, while Lily has always had nice teeth.... Scout the foster has always had nasty brown teeth... until I put her fully on raw. Now they aren't perfect, but they are so completely different than they were! Its kind of amazing really. And I love that they have zero bad breath, well unless they've been eating sheep/cow poo in the pasture but thats another story! :)
