I've been feeding raw for 3 years, BUT I have been feeding mini dachshunds, which are (kind of) known for being easy.

We have Pixie now - she's eating 2.5-3 pounds a day and looking good. She's about 120 pounds, but it's hard to weigh her. She went chicken (2.5 lb whole fryer cut in half, twice a day), then turkey (a whole tome neck, twice a day), and is now on pork (pork neck bone one meal, but it's pretty big, so I give her 3 chicken frames for the other meal). She's also have a little bit of beef/organ mix (beef scraps and 15% organ ground together) to hide her 2 salmon oil pills every day. The beef/organ mix is maybe the size of a golf ball, so nothing substantial.

So, blah blah blah... On to my question.

She has been itching kind of since day 1 and now has visible (though small) spots that don't have as much hair.

My first thought is that the fryers are definitely enhanced with sodium. I get them on bulk from a poultry distributor in Austin, TX (East Poultry). I'm almost positive that's it. I bought 26 of them and wanted to get through them first. Today was her last fryer. So tomorrow we will be free from any enhanced meat. She wasn't getting them every day, but probably an average of every other day.

Is there anything else that could cause the itching/coat loss? I'm thinking maybe she needs to be started on the organ meat, maybe more meat/fat (too much bone)?

I'm pretty sure chicken necks, chicken frames, and turkey necks are NOT enhanced since they're kind of "throw-away" pieces, am I correct? Again, from the poultry distributor in Austin.

EDIT: I was just reading the coconut oil thread, and since I had some (from a mini dachshund Mom who blew her coat after a litter) I gave her about 2 Tbl. She loved it! Also rubbed it on the biggest hair loss spot, but of course she's licking it off ::sigh::

It very well could be the enhancement causing the itchies.

The best thing to do is ask the supplier straight up if the meat is enhanced with anything. All of the parts you mention above that we buy in bulk are NOT enhanced, but I have seen enhanced necks in stores, so ask just to be safe.
I find that all of my dogs do a lot better the more red meat they get. Beef heart is a huge staple in our house, and I've never seen it enhanced.
Aren't Danes fun to feed?! You hardly even have to cut anything!

YES!! These pork neck bones are pretty huge, with a lot of meat on them, and bone that not just any dog can go through. And she LOVES them! It takes here about 45 minutes to go through it, but she does, and she has a great time doing it!

Edited my original post, too...

Ya, Im with Linsey, more then likely it is the enhanced chicken(and anything else that might be enhanced.) While I dont have a Dane 3 out of my 5 are very sensitive to enhanced meats, and start itching like crazy if given any.

And AH...I LOVE seeing them break down pork necks!:thumb: Those are Rhett's favorite meal by far!!

After doing more research I think the hair loss may actually be due to her blowing her coat. Dachshunds don't really do this and while I knew GD did... It's different actually seeing it! She rarely scratches or licks anymore, so that leads me to the believe that doing away with the enhanced chicken was a good decision.

Also, she is fully transitioned now. I'm trying her on fatty meat with extra organ. She's getting 24 oz of beef blend (10% of this blend is organ) and 24 oz of chicken cages or turkey necks. She's also getting 1/2 oz (10%) of chicken livers. In addition, she gets 3 Omega salmon pills a day and 3 Tbl of coconut oil.

So she seems to be doing pretty well. She's playful and happy and her poops are looking less crumbly.
