Ok, this is the big question, my husband says I am not saving money when I drive two hours one way to get food. Its obvious if you do the math, I am spending extra.

So how far does everyone drive for food that you pay for?

And if its free how far would you drive?:becky:

for the regular meat i drive about 40km so a bit more than 30min. For free meat it depends on how much and what but up to 2 hours.

I have driven about an hour and a half for around 100lb of free food. That would be my max.

It depends.

If its a large amount, I will drive far depending on the amount. Recently someone emailed me with a whole sheep to give away (literally, a live sheep! LOL). I turned them down because they were about 3-4 hours away and that is too far to justify the score.

I have driven about an hour for 100 lbs of meat and another hour for 25 hens.

You see, it really depends on what it is, and where it is. You have to factor in what that meat would cost if you bought it, what you are driving, how far and how much gas is. If the cost of gas is the same as the cost of food, then its not really a score. I would drive anywhere for venison because that cost a lot to buy but I wouldn't drive 3-4 hours with our huge diesel truck to pick up a sheep. If it were more than one sheep, I would have taken the trip.

Many times the meat comes to us and that is always the best way to go! :)

I don't usually consider the amount of driving it takes, if it's something I think the dogs need then I will drive, I drive for a living so it's not a big deal. But, usually my Husband will be going someplace for his work and he'll be able to stop in places that have particular items that are wanted like Portland for goat.

I don't usually get free items but I have given free stuff often to members here.

Well that helps me think about things. There isn't a lot of free going on in my area lol. But hopefully this deer season I will score some meat, keeping my fingers crossed.

I think I will drive three hours for that but it will be worth it...deer isn't plentiful in my area. So its a good meat to give different.

Usually as far as we have to, we drive back and forth to our processor which is 45 minutes, the venison processor in fall and winter is 45 minutes as well. we've driven 2 hours for free meat though, and there was no regrets :thumb:
