I have noticed that some of the meat I get has a lot of fat, especially beef heart... most of the time I trim off quite a bit but leave a little on there. How much should fat should a dog get?

I don't trim any fat at all. Dogs use fat for energy, and mine for the most part are energetic enough that they use it well.

I don't trim fat, unless I get a very fatty cut of pork. Then I save it for another meal that is lower in fat. I make fat about 10% of the diet.

I think it depends on the dog, some do really well with lots of fat added to their diet and some, well one of mine not so much. Try to increase the fat content and see what happens

I trim the fat, and actually still skin the quarters I give to Khan. He does better without A LOT of fat. Shelby however does not need to have as much trimmed. Just like people, each dog is different. It's just a matter of doing what works for you.

My girls were over-weight before getting on raw, so I'm trying to help them slim down. The beef trim we get is very high in fat, since it is the part that gets trimmed off the roasts. My two really do not need that much fat, so I trim off as much excess as I can. There is still enough for basic dietary needs and skin condition, once all is said and done, and also when I'm trimming, I will set aside some little tidbits and toss them to the girls as "candy."

I've been taking the skin off the chicken legs for them, too. I think they do better without it. There is still just enough fat left on to keep them healthy.

The goat meat is very lean, though. I don't add any fat to it, unless I've combined some beef trim into a light meal of goat scraps. The beef trim does have more than enough fat in it for their needs.

The only time I trim fat is off of tripe. Beef tripe is very fatty in places and I think its too much. Otherwise, they get whatever fat there is. Some days they get more fat than others. With the influx of deer meat, I need to start adding a little more fat to their meals now.

I trimmed the fat when first transitioning to raw. Once they were doing well I would leave some on until they got to the point that they can handle whatever amount of fat in in the cut of meat. If the meat doesn't have a lot of fat I add some fatty trim I keep for such meals.

I trim off about half the fat, and some skin on chicken thighs. Other than that, I leave it on.

I don't trim any of the fat off my dog's meals, but aside from beef heart I don't really feed particularly fatty cuts so I have no need.

I have sometime wondered if the fat content in some PMR diets is too high, since commercially raised meat animals tend to be so much fattier than wild animals. I wonder if this is why we do see pancreatic issues sometimes. Fat is a good thing. Fat is energy. Fat is good for skin and coat.... but I look at the wild ducks we process ourselves, and how lean they are... and then the incredibly fatty ducks I occasionally buy at the store, and sometimes I just wonder....
