I have a friend who is in the beginning stages of researching raw feeding. She asked if she could feed armadillo? They are rampant in her area and would be a plentiful and easy meat source. Anyone know if they are OK to feed? Of course she would freeze first.

Nobody knows?? These creatures are common in the south where she lives. I don't know if you have to get a permit to kill one? But they are ALL over so I thought I'd ask.

Opinions?

No, they aren't endangered. In Florida, where my friend lives, they are as common as rabbits or squirrels. Probably more so. They are everywhere.

I haven't been able to get an answer to this one!!!

So I had to google it! People eat armadillo...they are scavengers and will eat roadkill...so sounds like omnivores...interesting...i don't know if I'd feed it on a regular basis, maybe every once in a while.

Okay so I had to look them up on Wikipedia...I see them all the time (I live in Texas) but must admit I knew nothing about them. They're insectivores, and mostly eat termites, ants, grubs, and other bugs, but will also eat amphibians, small reptiles, fungi, tubers, and carrion.

They were also hunted during the Great Depression, and in east Texas were commonly called "Hoover Hogs".

I don't see why the occasional armadillo would be bad. They might need to be skinned first, though, or...de-shelled? Not sure a dog could eat their armor.

Thanks guys. I will tell her that they are OK as an occasional meal after freezing for 2 weeks and skinning (or removing the armor).

Yeah they're kind of like anteaters or something? They look close to the lizard family. I realize they're not though. I, too, visited Wikipedia.

We don't get these in NYC.

Armadillos in Florida? Now that doesn't seem quite right...
Maybe they escaped form a zoo or are abandoned pets or something. Never seen one around, but I can say for sure that they aren't native to Florida :p.

Don't see anything wrong with feeding them.
