So Bindi is just about 2 weeks into her new raw lifestyle and here's the update so far:

Except for the mishap at the in-laws right at the beginning (she was slipped something under the table), she looks great! Her poop seems to still be stabilizing... if it looks to dry and chalky, I use less bone... too runny, I give her more. Haven't quite found a happy medium yet, but I'm not worried.

The only time she threw up a bit of bone was after the first day & I found it in her blanket where she sleeps. I could tell she threw up, but it wasn't nearly as messy or gross as when she's thrown up in the past.

The red rims around her eyes have really improved and her actual eyes look gorgeous! Dark, shiny and inquisitive! Her coat has always been very soft and shiny, but with a sort of 'greasy' feeling on occasion. Well, that slight greasiness seems to have gone away. She still has days where she rubs her nose of the carpet and rubs her eyes and scratches, but it's not constant anymore. For the most part, she doesn't itch but the next day she might have a mild flare up and then she's ok the day after that. And yes, on some days she does radiate the smell of chicken (especially her breath!) but other days, she smells great!

Overall, very happy with how things are going... And while she has always been incredibly passionate about eating, it's so nice to watch her really take her time and work her way through a nice piece of raw chicken, bones and all. Did I mention I'm still amazed at how she doesn't inhale it like she used to do with her kibble?? It's so great to watch the transformation process & it's only been two weeks

That's when I introduced the turkey. The hoodlums were on bone in chicken for two weeks, everything went well, I started to add turkey. You do a meal of turkey, a meal of bone in chicken, a meal of turkey, a meal of bone in chicken...keep doing the bone in chicken but you're adding the new protein. Do this for about a week...if things are still going well, you can introduce another protein.

And I had something brilliant I was going to say but I just went blank. Best of luck and you're doing great!

Sounds like things are going very well!!

Turkey was our second protein too. For Remi we introduced turkey at about 1 1/2 weeks into raw. He was introduced as a puppy and every transition was very easy for him. I think after 2 weeks of chicken, turkey will be great to try out next!!

Best of luck! :)

i was one of the ones who did everything wrong in the beginning, so my dogs stayed on each protein for 2-3 weeks....i think they were on chicken for about a month before i added turkey and then it started to go a little faster.

the one piece of advice that really held sway with me....was introducing small amounts, not an entire meal all at once...with the richer proteins, like fish and pork and beef and other rich red meats, like heart....organs, too.

I buy both turkey necks and turkey tails. Turkey necks are a staple in our home, and I think they're really one of the best RMB meals for medium to large dogs. That being said, my Corgi use to plow through turkey neck just fine, too.
I have quite large dogs, the smallest being a 55lb Boxer, so all turkey parts are a go in our house.

Somehow whole fish has managed to be the second thing introduced to the last three puppies. But, puppies tend to transition much faster and easier.

i think all bones have the potential of choking risks, just as the piece of canteloupe i just ate did a few minutes ago....

which means to me, anything and everything has a potential for choking....

i watched my dogs tackle turkey necks, lamb necks, pork necks....and before i knew better, band saw cut chops....just because the edges are so sharp....

and i've watched my little pug swallow a whole drumstick....hork it up a few times...i've read about dogs swallowing whole bones without problem....

and i've read where dogs get stuck inbetween their teeth...

and, yes, dogs can get impacted....'course many blame raw bones, but it's usually a sock or a toy or remnants of whatever the dog has found outside...

the point to what i am saying i think...is this.

there are risks to waking up in the morning and walking to the bathroom. you could slip on a rug, step wrong...and those same risks apply to everything we do and eat....and that which we feed our dogs....

considering the benefits of all that is raw, i would recommend that you take the chance with turkey necks...it's a great help in building their strength and strengthening their teeth and gums and tongues and throats and necks and jaws and mouths....and their gnawing abilities....and crunching abilities...

I'm glad that things are going well for you. Me to I'm almost at week 2 with one, I'll start another thread. I use turkey necks and backs but I am about the only one that uses turkey backs i think. I have one butcher at the groc. store that cuts up his own turkey into legs, wings and breasts and no one was buying the neck and backs. Well I came in and the rest is history. He cuts them across the back in nice pieces for my basset. I just love them. To bad you can't get them some of the cuts would be a good size for your pup.
