Any Risk Associated with Too Much Liver?

I was perusing the rawfeeding Yahoo group, which I don't particularly like, however, there was a post mentioning liver. The topic of discussion was the potential risk of excess vitamin A due to too much liver.

I have not started my doxie on his liver + kidney combo, but will this weekend. He has been getting approximately 10% of his daily organs in the form of liver only. I am curious whether others have any further information regarding this issue and whether it indeed is anything that necessitates relatively precise measuring / weighing so as to avoid it.

I don't buy their story. As far as I have been able to determine, you would have to feed massive doses of liver to cause a vit A problem. I think bowel intolerance would be reached long before Vit A overdose. In our situation, I wouldn't worry about it.

No, I don't believe you need to measure things out precisely. Just feed a little each day or feed a larger portion once every week or two. People on the Raw feeding yahoo group are far more uptight and concerned about exact numbers and figures. I'm personally not a fan of that community.

I don't worry about it. We do a little bit of liver every day because a lot at once upsets Rocky's tummy (everything upsets Rockys tummy!). Chelsy gets a lot more ratio for her size then the boys because it seems to help her digestive system and she handles it a lot better then they do in large amounts. But, they just get 'some' added to their food. So far they are doing fine. I've yet to measure anything and the dogs are doing well (except I made Shade pudgy and have to cut back on him.....he REALLY loves his food!)

the 80 - 10 - 10 is a guideline...and it's a pretty good guideline, considering that each component has goodness...and too much of a good thing can be not such a good thing...

just remember, when you're reading that group, they talk about how old the roadkill should be before you maybe consider not taking it......so take what is said, there and even here sometimes and most forums with a grain of salt...

although i think i'd be more inclined to listen here than most places....

a human would have to take 5000 iu of vitamin per day for five years to cause toxicity....of course, that depends on the size of the human.

same goes with a dog.

first off, as has been mentioned, feed too much liver and you've got cannon butt, so there's sort of a built in control button which tells you how much to feed.....:)

then cut that amount in half or so and add in another organ for other goodness.....
