1st Fish Meal = Failure

So today I decided to give Rayne her first whole fish (Tilapia). She is pretty much a monster about ANY type of food, and also in-edible things, so I thought she would probably eat the fish no problem. Nope. I gave it to her half-frozen, she sniffed, nibbled but didn't eat any. I peeled the skin off and gave her just a bit of flesh, no go. I let it thaw all the way out and tried again, nothin.

So I brought the other dogs outside, thinking a little competition might motivate her.....that didn't work either. So I gave up and of course, Miss Iron Stomach (Beauty) snatched up the fish head and trotted out into the yard to crunch it up. Even the male Pom grabbed the little pieces and ate it up. Rayne just watched.

Ugh!

Any ideas? I have a good amount of these fish, I bought in bulk before I realized she might not even like them. I don't know if grinding would make any difference. The fish won't go to waste, I'll just give them all to Beauty and see if Rayne will eat canned fish, but I'm open to any tricks those more experienced might know of!

On a lighter note :tongue1: Here is my baby girl, 17 weeks now, scowering the bottom of the pantry for wayward kibbles.

we all know THAT look.....

if she didn't eat it for brekkie, then serve it for dinner...if she doesn't eat it for dinner, serve it for brekkie....

i'm a softie...there are those here who will tough love it until the dog gets hungry enough and i agree with it. i just don't have the spine to actually do it. :)

you might want to cut it up, not grind it. i find my old girl who loved fish and suddenly doesn't anymore....will eat sardines if they are cut into cubes....even the head.

Haha, I love the pics~! I don't have much advice for you though, other than tough love. My Louis does the same thing...he will eat ANYTHING...except raw fish. I haven't bothered with tough love because he gets plenty of variety already and he loves canned fish like I love cake

Unfortunately tough love would be somewhat inappropriate with a young puppy like her (I don't recommend full force tough love for younger dogs). With that being said, if she was my puppy I would fast her until tomorrow and try again. If she doesn't eat it this next time around give her a smaller meal of her least favorite food, but wait several hours after offering the fish to give it. You don't want to reinforce her by being picky (ie she turns her nose up at fish and you reward her by giving her something else!).

I wouldn't fast her past that first day. Puppies typically Lean faster than adults when it comes to skipping meals LOL

hahaha, that is exactly what Raja did with fish. Although he was protective and laid by it, he just stared at it, if either of the other two went near it, he picked it up and moved it, but again, wouldn't even think of eating it!! I tried to serve it for 2 days and he refused for 2 days...(that's 4 meals) so I gave up (the fish was nasty by then and grossing me out!!) so he got chicken....

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I don't think I'm at the point where I can do tough love yet though, even for a day. She lets me know when she's very hungry, she will sit in her crate, look at me with pitiful eyes, and whine........I can't stand it. I'm a hard ass about other things, and she does fast the mornings before we go to training, so I'll see if she likes canned fish before I tough love this one

Sheba will not eat fresh fish but will eat every bite and more (if I would give her more) of canned fish. I even cut it up and mixed it with other things but she would just pull the fresh sardine out and throw it on the floor....

i can't give you a true count, but i've seen posts on here where the dog flat out refuses to eat fish...and many times it's tilapia....which, in my not so humble opinion, is not a fish i would feed a dog....mainly because it's farmed, mostly....and if not, it's wild from thailand or the phillipines, i believe....

fresh caught sardines and anchovies have the highest omega threes and i'm wondering how your dog would do with that....especially if you just give him a cube of it....and that's it..and gradually increase.

course, if the refusal is adamant and he wins out over any tough love you can muster, there's always canned fish in oil..which would be good for them...since fat is good...and whilst olive oil is plant based....it won't hurt them.....whereas soy based fishes in oil would.

I might try sardines or anchovies, thanks! Tilapia is the only frozen fish I can get from any of my bulk suppliers, and it's the cheapest, but I had heard it's not the best. So it might actually be in Rayne's best interest that she doesn't like it. That little diva might have expensive tastes

I had not heard that about soy based oils, good to know!

My dog has complete refusal for wild turkey. The 1st time she had raw fish she chewed it and dropped it on the floor and looked at my husband like uuumm really???? lol. Honestly, think the fish is a texture thing, she got over it and eats it now fine. Too bad I cant get her to "get over" her dislike for wild turkey. haha. The tough love.....I did it a few meals in a row for the turkey, but couldnt keep it going. My husband says there must be something about it she just doesn't like. I gave up on that, becasue she will eat any turkey from the butcher. Good luck w/ the fish :)

i figure there are so many ways to get the protein into our dogs that they need, that uber tough love, at least for me, is just not part of my make up....especially with my old girl...

i might do it for a few days....but most of the time, i will start them out on a new protein with tiny bits of the protein to get them used to it, rather than give it as a meal....so when it was time for fish, i gave them bits of sardine....and gradually gave them more until it became a meal....i did the same thing with kidney and liver...although they get both every day as their early morning pee walk.....well, they think it's a treat....:)

and with my youngun'....being a pug, there's a built in 'i'll eat whatever's in front of me button that has an automatic on switch :)

I tried my boy on thawed pilchards last weekend for the first time and he is not a fussy eater at all and will eat canned sardines, well he tried and tried bless him, but just didn't take to it. He kept going back to the fish but I think it was a textural thing too, slimy maybe, but then he loves liver and kidney? anyhow I left it in his bowl for a couple of hours and then just got rid of it. I'm not bothered I will just continue with the canned sardines in water or olive oil - not soya as mentioned above.

My dogs LOVE sardines...frozen solid. Not thawed, not semi-thawed, but hard as a rock frozen. Any less than that and you can tell they don't like the texture. But when I bring out the "fish-pops", oh boy! They get excited! I've never fed them canned fish, as I get the sardines from a local fishmonger for $1.49/lb. and I'm happy with that price. But yeah, I don't feed tilapia. It doesn't offer any of the Omega 3 benefits of ocean fish, and from what I understand many a dog turns up their nose at it.
