Hello, I'm a newbie, I work as a Vet assistant/pet groomer for my father who is a Veterinarian (and miraculously supports my decision to feed raw) my 4# chihuahua and 11# pomeranian just started eating raw a week ago today. They are doing great, no digestive upsets and they are eating it like champs. Zoey my chihuahua has a lot of health issues, and had knee surgery on the 2nd of July so I was worried about the transition for her, but she's doing remarkable. She is allergic to chicken, beef, corn, wheat in kibble form, but so far her red skin appears to be clearing up, and she definitely isn't as itchy, and another cool thing is she no longer shivers n shakes all the time like she used too when fed kibble. Right now they are eating Chicken/Cornish Hens. I had a couple of questions, I know hearts/gizzards are considered meat, but would they be okay to start adding now or do I need to wait for another week or two? Both Zoey and Georgie have normal poops. I am planning on switching my 70# golden retriever to raw but not until I can buy another deep freezer as the one we have is too small for both hubby and I's meats and the furkids meats when I'd be feeding Shellie 1 & 1/2# per day, lol, for now she is on a rotation diet of TOTW, Wellness Core, Blue Wilderness. Anyways just wanted to share that I've had a successful week with my 2 little ones, and ask the question about the hearts/gizzards. I know that organs should come in about a month after feeding, correct?

Welcome to the forum. I'm less than a week into raw feeding my Standard Poodle and can't really answer your questions, but I just want to welcome you and say it's great that you're having success with Zoey and Georgie.
Thanks! I am really excited about it, I have a 12 & 1/2 year old Standard poodle, Cassie but she lives with my dad, my sister now has 3 standard poodles, and my other sister has 2 of Cassie's puppies who are 10 years old....my family is a Standard Poodle loving family :) I'd own one myself but hubby was against big dogs...until I got my psycho ADHD OCD Golden.....she was a rescue that fell into my lap when he went to working graveyards and I wanted a big dog home with me lol....she wouldn't protect me to save my life...well she'd jump on the offender, and grab their hands with her mouth annoying them to death lol.

I would add a couple of other protein sources before I fed heart. I would add turkey, pork, and maybe beef (add them about a week apart) ... THEN add small amounts of heart. You can feed larger and larger portions of heart as time passes. I now feed my dogs whole meals of beef heart.

You could try them in a month. I prefer waiting 2 months to feed organs just to minimize the chance of digestive upset. In the long run, it won't adversely affect your dogs to wait.

Welcome! Its fantastic that your little ones are doing so well with raw! Good to have you here and don't hesitate to ask any questions!
congrats on feeding your babies raw....you can scour craigslist for a cheap freezer..many of us got ours that way....and then you can tackle the ocd/add golden :)

you sound like a great lover of dogs...you'll fit right in....

i started my dogs the way rawfeddogs recommended.....and, even though yours aren't having a problem...his recommendations really did make for a very smooth transition...it takes a while for a dog's system to truly convert itself to raw....

we are four months in and i believe my dogs, who eat every protein now....are still getting used to it....little subtle changes in their behaviour, their teeth, their coats, their stools.....

good luck to you...sounds like your on the right track..
