How do you feel about free meat?

I read a lot about people getting free meat from hunters, peoples freezers, putting up kijiji adds, etc. I got some stuff from my local butcher, and my neighbour who hunts, and I'm fine with that.

My concern is meat from strangers. whether it's freezer burnt or hunter leavins, I'm kind of paranoid. I don't know these people. I don't know what's in this meat, or if anything's been done to it. I know no one in their right mind would poison meat for a dog or the like... but I've met a LOT of people not in their right mind. How do you ensure that it's safe? Am I just too paranoid?

That is a very interesting and thought-provoking question... I think I wouldn't take free meat from individuals I didn't know for just that reason. But I know for a fact that I'm paranoid, lol.
There really isn't a way to make sure it's safe, we've gotten 30-40lbs of venison fro free now, about 10lbs of beef (roasts and steaks freezer burnt) some freezer burnt chicken, and I've fed it all. you just have to trust that they want to give it away rather than trash it and let it go to waste. most of them are dog owners as well, and are intrigued by why i'm feeding my dog raw meat.
Some people brought this up before, but I'm just not one to live life paranoid about things... I meet the people and scope it out before I take the meat and so far my judgement hasn't steered me wrong.

HMMMM....I am from the school of thinking...nothing is free!!! and if it is free there is a reason for that!!!!...but hey thats just me!!...((and aint rolling dice with my dog health )
If the meat IS freezer burned it only changes in texture, not nutritional value. I am one that advertises all of the time. I have been very successful with recieving tons of free meat. Just about everything has been butcher wrapped or in original packages. I think someone would have to go to a lot of trouble poisoning the meat, refreezing it to look like it was originially wrapped and then contact you to feed it to your dogs. JMO. I do very well with free meat in the fall when hunters are making room for deer during the season or butchering cows.

LET ME ALSO make clear I am A new yorker...so you know we always skeptical...of especially free stuff..lol!!
We have probably gotten 2000 pounds of free meat from people over the years. We throw out whatever doesn't look good or isn't appropriate to feed. Never had an issue. I'm actually getting 50-60 pounds of moose and elk this week. Also got 75 pounds of halibut for free vacuum packed last week.

I'm not one to be paranoid either. We have never had a problem feeding free meat in the past and I highly doubt that we will in the future.
