I'll give examples: 1st Choice Adult

Chicken meal, brewer’s rice, chicken, barley, oats, chicken fat naturally preserved with mixed tocopherols, cellulose, beet pulp, natural flavor, sundried tomato pomace, whole flax seeds, lecithin, canola oil, calcium propionate, choline chloride, mannan-oligosaccharides, glucosamine sulphate, Yucca schidigera extracts, chondroitin sulphate, vitamins and minerals.

The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product, in meal form. The main grain in the food is brewers yeast, which is a low quality product and byproduct. Beet pulp is controversial filler which appears to be used in large quantities in this food. Overall, this food appears rather light in meat content but suffers more from the inclusion of a large number of low quality ingredients.

Active Care Healthy Joint Lamb & Brown Rice Dry Formula:

Brown Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Cartilage (Source of Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate), Canola Oil, Flax Seed, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Salt, Grapeseed Oil, Brewers Dried Yeast, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Zinc Proteinate, Monosodium Phosphate, DL-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate (Source of Vitamin E), Sodium Selenite, Riboflavin Supplement (Vitamin B2), Copper Sulfate, Amino Acid Chelates of Zinc, Iron, Manganese, Copper and Cobalt, Niacin, Ascorbic Acid (Source of Vitamin C), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, D-Biotin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Calcium Iodate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement.

There is only one named meat source in the top five ingredients (and in the food overall), and the primary ingredient is a grain (rice). Lack of quality meat ingredients is the main reason for the low assessment given to this food.

Arden Grange Adult Light Chicken & Rice:

Whole Grain Rice (min 31%), Whole Grain Maize (min 31%), Chicken Meal*, Beet Pulp, Chicken Fat*, Fresh Chicken (min 5%), Dried Brewers Yeast, Egg Powder, Fish Meal*, Linseed, Fish Oil*, Minerals, Vitamins, Nucleotides, Prebiotic FOS, Prebiotic MOS, Cranberry Extract, Chondroitin Sulphate, Glucosamine Sulphate, MSM, Yucca Extract, L-Carnitine. *Preserved with mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract.

The first ingredient in this food is rice, a decent quality grain. There is a further meat ingredient, chicken, sixth on the ingredient list. Beet pulp is a low quality ingredient and filler.

AvoDerm Natural Vegetarian Adult Dog Food:

A vegetarian product, this is not a natural foodstuff for canines. This food is based almost completely on grains, rather than fruits and vegetables though there is a small amount of vegetable matter in the minor ingredients. Avocado (meal and oil) is an unusual ingredient in dog food and one that we have some concerns about as avocadoes are toxic to dogs (toxic dose is unknown). Overall, and notwithstanding the complete absence of meat in this product, it does not appear to use high quality ingredients and is rated accordingly.

Best Breed Field Dog Diet:

Chicken meal, rice flour, oat flour, beet pulp, poultry fat, whole eggs, brewers yeast, natural flavors, fish meal, tomato pomace, lecithin, salt, soy oil, fish oil, calcium carbonate, potassium chloride, lysine, dl-methionine, garlic powder, vitamin C, potassium chloride, iron sulfate, vitamin E supplement, zinc oxide, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, citric acid (preservative), manganese oxide, manganese proteinate, vitamin A supplement, niacin supplement, pantothenic acid, riboflavin supplement (vitamin B 6), copper proteinate, copper oxide, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B 1), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B 6), vitamin D 3supplement, menadione demethylprimidinol, bisulfite ( vitamin K), folic acid, biotin supplement, calcium iodate (source of iodine), sodium selenite (source of selenium), vitamin B 12 supplement.

The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product, in meal form. The main grains in the food are oat flour and oat flour, neither of which is high quality. Beet pulp is controversial filler which appears to be used in large quantities in this food. There are no fruits/vegetables in the food though we appreciate the use of whole eggs.
